Story

For more than a century, Belfast was at the heart of the world's shipbuilding industry. Harland & Wolff became internationally renowned for constructing some of the most significant vessels in maritime history, including the RMS Titanic. Behind the towering cranes and vast shipyard structures lies a legacy of craftsmanship, innovation, hard work and community. For generations of Belfast families, the shipyards represented more than a place of work; they were woven into the fabric of everyday life, shaping the stories, livelihoods and identity of the city.

Hand drawn by Mary O'Sullivan using pencil and ink, the illustration was created to be included in the Cities of Ireland Toile de Jouy print, that was first debuted on the Ireland Fashion Week runway. This piece captures the distinctive industrial architecture and imposing presence of these iconic Belfast landmarks. Through every line and pen stroke, the artwork pays tribute not only to the cranes themselves, but to the people, skills and generations of craftsmanship that helped build Belfast's remarkable shipbuilding legacy.

Whether displayed in a home, office or cherished as a reminder of Belfast, this print celebrates an important piece of Northern Ireland's history. It is a meaningful gift for anyone with a connection to the city, from generations of shipyard families and former workers to those who simply appreciate Belfast's industrial heritage, architecture and unmistakable skyline.
